Frequently Asked Questions #2

COLLECTION OF ANTIQUE GREEN WARE
What Sells? Anything that has ever been acquired at any time or any place may sell in an estate sale. Palmetto Estate Liquidators sells property without regard to whether it was bought by your family a hundred years ago or yesterday at the local drug store. Cars, antiques, furniture, lamps, wall art, silver, china, furs, figures, rugs, toys, books, records, stationery, playing cards, appliances, utensils, pots and pans, glassware, bath and table linens, clothing accessories, purses, gloves, hats, scarves, precious and costume jewelry, workbenches, power and garden tools are only examples of what can and will be sold for the family. If we feel that some unique items deserve another market, such as a New York and/or European auction house, then we explore those markets. The items unsold remain the property of the family, who decides what is done with them in the end. Palmetto Estate Liquidators sells about 70 - 90% of all items in the home.
How does POSH/ Palmetto Estate Liquidators arrive at
the prices for my items? Pricing the merchandise involves many factors. We rely on an extensive reference library of antique and collectibles price guides, auction records, on-line reference sites and catalogs. In cases of very unusual and/or valuable items, the agent will seek the advice of a professional with relevant expertise. Pricing requires thoughtful examination, proper research and some current knowledge of the market value of many different kinds of items. The marketing agent must consider desirability, quantity, quality and location in figuring out a price. Also the price is determined along with the family who owns the item. The family must agree to a price found to be the best for selling the items.
What is done with things that do not sell? Palmetto Estate Liquidators does not have a retail outlet and does not want to be in the consignment business. At the completion of the sale, the remaining items
are disposed of per arrangement made ahead of time by the owner. We also do not remove items to resell at another estate sale.
Do I need to be present during the sale? When we started this service we encouraged the family to participate in the sale as the cashier. However after the first two and half to three years, we found that an owner's presence at the sale may negatively affect the success of sale. We now feel that it seems easier for the family to stay away, however if a family member would like to be there during the sale, as long as the buyers are unaware, there is no problem. This allows us to converse immediately with a family member regarding lower price offers.
